Nairobi, Kenya

The population of Kenya is about 45 million serviced by 96 orthopaedic surgeons but only one foot and ankle surgeon in the whole of East Africa. Most orthopaedic surgeons are concentrated in Nairobi the capital city with some in the other 3 or 4 large cities. The public hospitals are not very well equipped with orthopaedic equipment and most of the fixation systems are antiquated. The government hospitals are overwhelmed by trauma and therefore many substantial ankle fractures are not treated by surgery let alone other foot and ankle trauma. This leads to a significant number of complications from neglected trauma. Due to lack of prioritization, there is little elective foot and ankle surgery, and thousands of patients are left with crippling deformities. Many of these patients are not able to obtain treatment in a government facility due to lack of skill, awareness and availability of orthopedic equipment.
